J. Cole - ‘Truly Yours’ EP Review

image

J. Cole’s need to express weeping emotion in his music gets tiring, so much so that Big Ghost takes great lengths to think of soppy nicknames for him at every mention. I wouldn’t go that far, but his songs still end up in the “meh” part of my mind’s recycling bin.

With that being said, Truly Yours hits the nail on the head, AND it is sappy as shit. The main reason why it manages to appeal is his frank demeanor. It gives these tales of late-night introspection more of a reminder of his caring for others, not that he simply went on another Nicholas Sparks marathon and soaked his rhymes in tears.

I also keep in mind two things — the brevity and the context of the EP. With only five tracks to plow through, Cole’s hometown performance and great beat selection pays off more than if the songs were littered among others of this nature.

Also, Cole supposedly dropped these off for fans to highlight the style he’s working on for his next LP, Born Sinner. We can rest assured that the project’s headed in the right direction, but if every track maintains the same level of henny-soaked heartache and regret, then perhaps Truly Yours is more ominous than imaginable.

But I can say I enjoyed this. My gripes are pretty ephemeral: Cole uses the word “tears” too much, some of these emotional tracts have been worn out by every other “yo i’m deep and thoughtful” rapper, and “Tears For ODB” has a weird lyrical projection. Cole’s greatest achievement though, “Stay (2009),” does give me some hope for the best. I mean, it’s better than Nas’s version… right?

So I finally got to join the DEHH crew one on of their fabled reviews.

Let’s just say things get real.

The review is for Rick Ross’s “God Forgives, I Don’t.” Slightly NSFW at parts, but hilarious always.

I still haven’t found any crime rap that makes a better soundtrack to getting shot at two in the morning than Mobb Deep. On this title track from 1996’s ‘Hell On Earth’ shit is going down and Queensbridge is the battleground, with Havoc and Prodigy manning the guns with nonstop murderous lyrics.

One of the most enduring early hip hop tracks. All rappers after 1987 took their cues from Audio Two, whose MC Milk Dee and DJ Daddy-O were spitting about bodyguards and how def their rhymes were over banging beats. This is a remix by DJ Daddy Dog but it shows how enduring this song remains, regardless.

Wu-Tang Clan was, more or less, something to fuck with around the turn of the century. Then all of a sudden, Toney Starks a.k.a. P-Tone a.k.a. Ghost Deini a.k.a. Ghostface Killah dropped his solo album ‘Supreme Clientele’ and the ninjas from Shaolin were back on the map. This track ‘Nutmeg’ features Ghost and the RZA in full effect. It’s like a nice dream where all rappers can actually rap.
