So the musical landscape at the moment:

1. Aaliyah - The Ultimate Aaliyah (compilation to actually listen to her music without nostalgic bias)

2. Lil B - PYT (Pretty Young Thug) (Swag Swag Swag Swag Swag Swag Swag)

3. Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See (They’re playing at a festival in Houston June 1, so gotta see it they’re good)

4. Ra Ra Riot - Beta Love (The title track is an effortless IV flush of 80s pop, so hopefully the rest of the album stands at that point as well)

5. Fugazi - 13 Songs (I had a short punk bender a couple weeks ago, and Minor Threat and Bad Religion stuck out the most. I decided that Fugazi, the hardcore successor to Minor Threat via frontman Ian McKaye, would be more my thing)

6. The Coathangers - Larceny & Old Lace (All-female band? Check. Persistence in unorthodox song arrangement and vocal performances? Check. Creepy cover? CHECK)

7. KEN Mode - Entrench (I have my qualms about modern metal but this band seems not to far off the deep end in style or theme)

8. The Cure - Greatest Hits (So supposedly they are in the same boat as The Smiths, but more pressing is that Adele covered their song “Lovesong” on 21 and that’s my favorite track on the album.)

9. Adrian Younge Presents… 13 Reasons to Die Starring Ghostface Killah (Sadly this drops April 16. The hip hop scene has been pretty dry and nondescript, but things usually don’t pop off until the summer anyway)

Sheeeit, well it got cold quick. Stay warmer than that new North Face you just copped with the heat from this week’s Dose of the OG.

I still haven’t found any crime rap that makes a better soundtrack to getting shot at two in the morning than Mobb Deep. On this title track from 1996’s ‘Hell On Earth’ shit is going down and Queensbridge is the battleground, with Havoc and Prodigy manning the guns with nonstop murderous lyrics.

One of the most enduring early hip hop tracks. All rappers after 1987 took their cues from Audio Two, whose MC Milk Dee and DJ Daddy-O were spitting about bodyguards and how def their rhymes were over banging beats. This is a remix by DJ Daddy Dog but it shows how enduring this song remains, regardless.

Wu-Tang Clan was, more or less, something to fuck with around the turn of the century. Then all of a sudden, Toney Starks a.k.a. P-Tone a.k.a. Ghost Deini a.k.a. Ghostface Killah dropped his solo album ‘Supreme Clientele’ and the ninjas from Shaolin were back on the map. This track ‘Nutmeg’ features Ghost and the RZA in full effect. It’s like a nice dream where all rappers can actually rap.

Aka the 2011 Mr Bojangles. This nigga also deserves recognition as the coon of the decade namsayin. I dont even kno how muthafuckas listen to this niggas music….nevermind callin that shit hip hop. If it was 1930 this nigga would be rockin a necklace made of chicken legs n pigs feet n be tap dancin on watermelons for a livin. Anyways…sons music is only technically hip hop….like drinkin a beer wit a straw n a umbrella in the bottle is technically drinkin a beer namsayin. Hidin behind 50 Cent wont protect you from ya own bitchassness tho son. This nigga been germinatin in the garden of wackness for a hot minute now. This nigga done splashed hisself wit enough water from the fountain of coonery to last 12 lifetimes. Stop givin this nigga a pass jus cos he young. Muthafuckin Run DMC was around this niggas age when they made King Of Rock yo. LL Cool J was on his first comeback when he was this niggas age yo. NWA made Fuck The Police when they was this niggas age son. You cant hide behind youth forever you clown ass muthafucka. If I see you Imma smack the slaves outta you nigga. Its open season on you son.

Recent Musical Ventures.

  1. Justin Martin & Ardalan- Mr. Spock
Heard a snippet of this song on NPR and hunted the rest. Dope shit.
  2. Went back to Sit Down, Man and tried to revision my feelings about Das Racist. Initially, they were way too referential and over the place… but there is some method to the madness. This is one of the goodies.
  3. Girl Talk- All Day
Basically a one-man circus, this dude Greg Gillis takes Radiohead and slams some Ol’ Dirty Bastard on it, marries Lil’ Jon with Nirvana, stuff like that. Super chill mix and danceable as fudge. Free download is yes.
  4. Pusha T- My God
I love this dude’s flow. It’s gritty and playful at the same time, and anything he rhymes about(usually the streets) has such purpose. The Sergio Leone-esque instrumentals are top notch.
  5. The White Stripes- Seven Nation Army
This is one of my favorites of theirs; never gets old.
  6. Curren$y- Breakfast
The horns are soooooooo delicious. Curren$y’s flow is too sick. Best Nawlins MC in my opinion.
  7. Ghostface Killah- Apollo Kids

I just bought this and haven’t heard any, but I know its good.
